Storage requirements for offline maps vary by region. There is no single number: a dense metropolitan area contains far more roads, buildings and places per square kilometre than a rural region, so two areas of similar size can differ greatly in download size. In Pino, the exact download size of every region is displayed before you download it, so you can check it against your free space and decide.

We intentionally do not publish a table of “typical” sizes here. Map data changes with every map update, and any figures we printed would drift out of date. Verified measurements for specific regions and app versions will be added to this page when we complete documented tests — including the app version, date and methodology used.

What determines the size of an offline map

  • Area covered — larger regions contain more data.
  • Density — cities pack more roads, buildings, addresses and points of interest into the same area than countryside does.
  • Included data — a true offline map bundles the visual map, a search index and a routing graph (see how offline maps work), which is why it is larger than a simple image cache.

How to manage storage in practice

  1. Check the size in the app. Every region shows its download size before you confirm.
  2. Download only what you need. Prefer specific regions over whole countries, especially on a Wear OS watch, which has less storage than a phone.
  3. Remove regions after a trip. Downloaded regions can be deleted to reclaim space and re-downloaded later.
  4. Leave headroom for updates. Map updates need some free space to install.

Watch vs phone

Storage is usually the binding constraint on a watch, not a phone. If you navigate from a Wear OS watch, plan region downloads a bit more deliberately — the same “size shown before download” rule applies on the watch.
