Does GPS Work Without Internet?
Yes. GPS works without an internet connection. Your phone or watch receives positioning signals directly from satellites (GPS, and usually also Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou). No mobile data, Wi-Fi or SIM card is involved in determining your position.
This is why an offline maps app can navigate in airplane mode, in remote areas, or abroad without roaming: the satellite receiver tells the app where you are, and the downloaded map tells the app what is around you.
Why people think GPS needs internet
Online map apps need internet for the map, not for the position. If you open a connected maps app with no signal, positioning still works — but the screen stays blank because the map tiles cannot load. That looks like “GPS is broken”, when actually only the map download failed. With an offline maps app such as Pino, the map is already on the device, so the same situation just works.
Two connectivity-related details are worth knowing:
- Assisted GPS (A-GPS) uses the network to download satellite orbit data, which can shorten the time to the first position fix. It is an accelerator, not a requirement — without it, the fix simply takes somewhat longer.
- Network-based location (cell towers, Wi-Fi positioning) is a separate, coarser system some apps use indoors. Outdoor navigation relies on satellites.
What this means in practice

On a Wear OS watch with built-in GPS, the same applies standalone on the watch — no phone nearby and no internet connection required after the map is downloaded.
Keep in mind that satellite reception needs a reasonably clear view of the sky: deep indoor spaces, tunnels and dense urban canyons can degrade any GPS device’s accuracy, online or offline.
