How to Use Offline Maps on Wear OS

With Pino, offline maps run directly on a Wear OS watch: map regions are stored on the watch, and place search, route calculation and turn-by-turn navigation all execute on the watch itself. After a region is downloaded, no nearby phone and no internet connection are required.

Step by step

1. Install Pino on your Wear OS watch. See the Wear OS page for details.
2. Download a map region to the watch. Do this while the watch has connectivity (Wi-Fi, or via its paired phone). The download size is shown before you confirm.
3. Leave the phone behind. Once the region is on the watch, Pino works standalone.
4. Search or pick a destination on the watch and start navigation. The watch’s built-in GPS provides positioning — no internet needed.

What runs on the watch

• Map display — downloaded regions render on the watch screen.
• Place search — search works against the on-watch map data.
• Route calculation — routes are computed on the watch.
• Turn-by-turn navigation — guidance runs on the watch using its GPS.

Two claims are worth separating, because they are not the same thing: Pino on Wear OS works offline (no internet after download) and it works without a phone (standalone on the watch). Many watch apps offer only the first, acting as a remote display for the phone. Pino provides both.

Practical tips

• Watches have less storage than phones, so download the specific regions you need rather than whole countries when possible.
• GPS on a watch, as on any device, wants a clear view of the sky for best accuracy.
